Metro Detroit Native Grant Horvat Is One Of Golf's Biggest Names

Updated: Mar 31

Most golf fans watching Grant Horvat’s YouTube videos—racking up millions of views with Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and a Creator Classic trophy in hand—might not realize he's from Michigan!

That's right, he was actually raised right here in Metro Detroit.

His path from our corner of the state, through a Pennsylvania stint, to Florida’s fairways is a story worth digging into.

Growing Up On Grosse Ile

Grant Horvat grew up on Grosse Ile. His father Steve Horvat was the head golf professional at Grosse Ile Country Club.

However, as a kid, Grant was a basketball player here in Metro Detroit before really beginning to take up the game of golf around age 12.

The Horvat family moved out of Michigan shortly thereafter.

High School and College Golf

Grant’s freshman year of high school took him to Pennsylvania, but in 2014, at 15, his family uprooted to Stuart, Florida, where he was surrounded by some of the best golf in America.

While at South Fork High School in Stuart, Florida, he earned First-Team All-Area honors in both 2015 and 2016.

Grant's success at the high school level led him to Palm Beach Atlantic University, where he competed for the Sailfish golf team.

Over his collegiate career, Horvat showcased consistent performance, earning multiple academic honors, including four appearances on the SSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll and recognition as a GCAA All-American Scholar.

On the course, he posted strong finishes, including a T-7 result at the SSC Tournament during his senior year, tying a school record.

Balancing athletics and academics, Horvat pursued a degree in marine biology while refining his game at the collegiate level.

YouTube Breakthrough

After college, Grant gave Steve Vecellio a call about working in the golf industry down in South Florida.

Vecellio is also a Metro Detroit native and a longtime golf professional. He was a pro at Red Run and Birmingham Country Club locally, while also playing competitively. Including the Buick Open in 2004.

Since 2018, Vecellio has been a golf professional down in Jupiter, Florida at Frenchman's Reserve Country Club. He knew Grant's father Steve from working in the industry together back in Michigan.

So Vecellio hired Grant to assist at Frenchman's Reserve... where he worked at the club, while also developing his passion for creating golf video content.

His YouTube channel has since blown up—over 1 million subscribers, hundreds of millions of views, and content centered around vlogs, and pro showdowns.

Grant has spun it into a business with apparel, brand deals, and much more.

Creator Classic Win

Grant’s 2025 has been a breakout, capped by his win at the PGA Tour’s Creator Classic at TPC Sawgrass on March 12. Up against top golf creators, he posted 1-over through eight holes, then drained a 15-foot birdie putt on the par-3 17th in a playoff to clinch it.

“That was one of the most nervous I’ve ever been,” he said. “It proved to me I can handle pressure.” Not bad for a Grosse Ile native flying under the radar.

Following a Local Star

Grant’s journey—from Grosse Ile to Pennsylvania, then Florida—may have taken him far from Metro Detroit, but his roots here run deep.

Here’s wishing Grant luck as he keeps pushing the boundaries of golf and content creation—we’re rooting for his continued success and can’t wait to see where his career takes him next.
