Detroit Golf Club (DGC) is in the midst of a transformative $16.1 million restoration project, bringing new life to its historic North Course, home of the PGA Tour’s Rocket Classic. Following the 2025 Rocket Classic, which concluded on June 30, construction began to restore the original 1916 design by legendary architect Donald Ross.

Led by golf architect Tyler Rae, the renovation aims to revive Ross’s bold vision while enhancing playability for both pros and members. The project, funded in part by member assessments and $2.2 million from Rocket Classic proceeds, is set to wrap up in time for the 2026 tournament, scheduled for late July to early August. The North Course is currently closed, but DGC is keeping 18 holes open, primarily using the South Course, with a few of its holes also getting upgrades. A full South Course renovation is planned for 2028 or 2029.

Main Updates to the North Course:

  • Lengthened Layout: New tee boxes will extend the course by 200–400 yards, with Hole 1 growing from 397 to 424 yards and Hole 2 from 453 to 475 yards.

  • Improved Drainage: New ditches and drains address flooding issues, replacing the large pond at the par-5 14th hole.

  • Bunker Restoration: Rebuilt and strategically placed bunkers restore Ross’s original design.

  • Fairway and Greens Upgrades: New grass and expanded tee box square footage enhance playability.

  • Modernized Irrigation: A new system ensures firmer, faster conditions for the 2026 Rocket Classic.

These changes will make the Rocket Classic more challenging for PGA Tour pros while keeping the course fair for members. The restored greens, bunkers, and layout will showcase DGC’s heritage, cementing its status as a premier golf destination. Stay tuned for more updates as we approach the 2026 season, and get ready for a revitalized Detroit Golf Club that’s sure to impress!
