A man in a blue quarter-zip sweater stands in a grassy field, holding a golf course site plan and gesturing toward a large expanse of rural land. Behind him, a construction fence spans the landscape under a clear blue sky. Overlaid text in the upper right reads, "Exclusive Country Club Coming to Ann Arbor"

A brand-new, ultra-exclusive country club is coming to Southeast Michigan — and it’s set to become one of the most talked-about golf developments in decades.

Frontier Club is planned for rural Lodi Township, southwest of Ann Arbor, with a projected opening in summer 2028. Unlike traditional country clubs, this project is being positioned as a highly curated, golf-focused destination designed for a small national membership base.

The development is being led by James Housler and Scott Kovanda, who have enlisted world-renowned architect Gil Hanse to design the course. Hanse is widely respected in the golf world and is known locally for his restoration of Oakland Hills Country Club’s South Course, which will host the 2034 U.S. Open.

Membership at Frontier Club is expected to be extremely limited, initially capped at approximately 50 members. The model is geared toward serious golfers who are willing to travel for a premium experience. With close proximity to Detroit Metro Airport and nearby private aviation access, the club is targeting a jet-set audience.

Plans include on-site lodging and dining, creating a true destination-style retreat. Notably, there are no plans for public access or professional tournaments. The focus is strictly on member play and a pure golf experience.

Michigan already ranks third in the nation with 868 golf courses, but very few new private courses have been built in Southeast Michigan in recent decades. Frontier Club represents a rare ground-up development at the highest end of the private market.

If completed as envisioned, this project could mark a significant new chapter for private golf in the Ann Arbor and Metro Detroit region.
