At Metro Detroit Golfers, we’re always looking for ways to engage with our passionate community of golfers. Recently, we asked you to help us rank the toughest greens in Michigan — and you delivered!
Across all platforms, we reached over 55,000 accounts. We tallied up the results and curated a list of which courses were mentioned most frequently in the comments.
Now, we’re excited to share the results.
To be clear, we actually didn’t provide any specific criteria on what makes a green “tough.” Instead, we just left that up to you, the golfer.
For some, it might be the speed of the greens. For others, maybe it could be the undulation, tricky pin placements, or the challenge of reading the break. Each course brings its own unique test, and that’s what makes this list so compelling.
Without further ado, here are the 10 golf courses with the toughest greens in Michigan, as voted by the Metro Detroit Golfers community:
Oakland Hills - South Course (Bloomfield Hills, MI)
Arcadia Bluffs - South Course (Arcadia, MI)
Crystal Downs (Frankfort, MI)
Washtenaw Golf Club (Ypsilanti, MI)
The Loop at Forest Dunes (Roscommon, MI)
Shepherd's Hollow (Clarkston, MI)
Belvedere (Charlevoix, MI)
Greywalls (Marquette, MI)
Red Run (Royal Oak, MI)
The Dream (West Branch, MI)
This list represents the voice of Michigan golfers, showcasing a wide range of courses, from historic clubs to modern layouts. It’s a reminder that no two golfers approach the game the same way — and that’s what makes the Michigan golf scene so rich and exciting.
As always, we appreciate your participation in these discussions. Stay tuned for more opportunities to share your thoughts on the best (and toughest) golf experiences around the state!
