Michigan golfers are a different breed. Whether it’s six inches of rain or a lingering winter chill, the desire to hit the links remains unshaken. We recently sat down with Bill Fountain, General Manager of The Majestic at Lake Walden, to talk about the 2026 season, the history of the course, and why this year’s turf is looking better than ever.

32 Years of Golf Excellence

The Majestic at Lake Walden isn't just another golf course; it’s a Jerry Matthews-designed 27-hole masterpiece that helped spark the upscale public golf boom in Michigan. Now in its 32nd year, the facility remains a premier destination for those seeking a high-end experience without the country club price tag.

Why the Turf is Thriving

While Michigan winters can be brutal on golf courses, Bill shared some fantastic news for players this spring. Thanks to an early, "fluffy" snowfall that acted as a natural insulation blanket, the grass was protected from the typical ice damage and desiccation that often plagues local courses.

"The golf course came through, in my opinion, the best it’s probably ever come through a winter,"

Bill noted. With proactive prevention strategies and a little help from Mother Nature, The Majestic is primed for a lush, green season.

From the Farm to the Fairway

Bill’s journey to becoming a staple in the Michigan golf community is rooted in hard work. Growing up in Mt. Pleasant with "farm blood" in his veins, he transitioned from baling hay to maintaining some of the state's most beautiful landscapes. After discovering he could turn his love for the outdoors into a career, he earned a degree in Turfgrass Management from Michigan State University—a background that clearly shows in the quality of the greens at The Majestic today.

The season is officially underway! Even when the weather gets a bit "Michigan," the team at The Majestic is working hard to keep the gates open and the carts moving.
