The transition from local excellence to the grandest stage in golf can happen in the blink of an eye. Just last week, Ryan Lenahan, PGA Director of Instruction at Walnut Creek Country Club, was in the familiar surroundings of South Lyon, Michigan. Fast forward to today, and he is walking the fairways of Aronomink Golf Club, preparing to compete against the best in the world at the 2026 PGA Championship.
The atmosphere at Aronomink is already electric. "There’s a buzz," Lenahan noted during a recent sit-down with Mike from Metro Detroit Golfers. "It’s grown as the day has gone on... being surrounded by the best players in the world is awesome."
A Challenging Layout
Aronomink is proving to be a formidable test. Clocking in at approximately 7,450 yards, the course demands both length and precision. However, it’s the "hazard-like" rough that has players talking. Following weekend rains, the thick, wet grass has become a major obstacle.
"I hit it out of the fairway by a few yards and literally it took me five or six minutes to find the ball," Lenahan shared. "If you hit it in the rough, you almost have to chip out. I can't get anything more than really an eight iron on it."
Dialing in the Driver
Preparation is everything when the margins are this thin. After cracking a driver head a few weeks back, Lenahan has been working closely with his Ping representative to find the perfect specs. For Ryan, getting the "big stick" dialed in early in the week is crucial for peace of mind before the first tee shot on Thursday.
As the tournament begins, the Metro Detroit golf community stands firmly behind one of its own. From the teaching tees at Walnut Creek to the bright lights of a Major, Ryan Lenahan is ready to embrace the challenge.
