Central Michigan University brand new golf facility.

Big news for golf in the Great Lakes State: Central Michigan University just got the green light to build a state of the art, 40-acre indoor/outdoor golf facility—right on its Mount Pleasant campus.

This ambitious project will be a game-changer for CMU’s men’s and women’s golf programs, boosting year-round training, recruiting, and the university’s standing in the highly competitive Mid-American Conference (MAC).

Here’s what we know so far:

  • $5.7 million pledged so far, including a historic $5 million lead gift, pushing the university more than halfway to its $11 million goal.

  • The CMU Board of Trustees recently approved the project’s design and pre-construction phase. Once fundraising wraps up, shovels will hit the ground.

  • The facility’s design includes indoor hitting bays with simulators, short-game areas, a dedicated fitness space, men’s and women’s locker rooms, an outdoor driving range, practice bunkers, and even reversible outdoor holes—perfect for creative practice sessions.

  • Year-round practice will give Chippewa golfers a competitive edge in the MAC and help attract top recruits from Michigan and beyond.

CMU golf coach Kevin Jennings has said this project will “elevate everything about our program”—from developing homegrown talent to competing with powerhouse schools. And with Michigan weather being what it is, the indoor piece is critical to keeping Chippewa golfers swinging all four seasons.

Golf has deep roots in Michigan, and it’s great to see CMU investing in the sport’s future. From new practice technology to top-tier short-game facilities, this is the kind of development that helps grow the game at the college level—and inspires the next generation of players.

For the Metro Detroit Golfers community, it’s another reminder of how strong the game is across our state, from college teams to public courses to private clubs.

We’ll be watching this project closely—and we can’t wait to see the impact once the new golf center officially opens.

Stay tuned to Metro Detroit Golfers for more updates on Michigan golf news, course spotlights, and the future of the game across our state!
